Nintendo has recently announced the surprise discontinuation of Club Nintendo in the coming months, with a replacement loyalty programme to take its place later in 2015. While new catalogue items are promised in multiple regions to help us dispose of leftover stars and coins, there'll also be a left-field freebie - Flipnote Studio 3D.
The app has been long-delayed in the West; it was initially held back in summer 2013 by high traffic from the Japanese release in the online galleries and services, and effectively disappeared from Western schedules when the free / friend distribution galleries in Japan were closed due to "offensive materials" being posted. Paid galleries - through a subscription service - remained online in Japan (as they're moderated) but the app drifted through month after month with silence from Nintendo of America and Europe.

I nearly commented on the forums today when the topic popped back up again to tell people to give up already, glad I didn't now. Can't believe Nintendo is bothering with it after all this time. It's nice it's free but I'm still not interested in using it, especially without online features.
It's no secret that Flipnote Studio has been one of the most anticipated DSiWare releases to date. The application has been described as like having your own portable animation studio right in the palm of your hands. Not only can you draw sketches and import photos, but you can then use the animation tools to bring those pictures to life. But exactly how powerful is this DSiWare application and does it offer up enough variety to keep DSi owners coming back for more?
The bottom screen of your DSi is where you'll do the majority of your drawing. And while you can choose to freehand your creations, the application also gives you a few ways to spice up your Flipnotes a bit. For starters you can import any photos that you've snapped with your DSi Camera application and use them in your projects. You can even edit these photos by adjusting their contrast and saturation settings using your stylus. Of course what Flipnote would be complete without a little music and sound effects, another neat feature that Flipnote Studio offers you. You can use your DSi microphone to input not only music, but also three different sound effects to liven up your Flipnote creation. You can even change the playing speed of these effects to given them a lower or higher-pitched tone.
There's no denying that Flipnote Studio is easily one of the best reasons to date to own a DSi system. While the program is simple enough for people of all ages to create a project, it still manages to offer up an almost endless amount of creative power limited only by the amount of time and effort users are willing to put into their projects. Couple all of this together with the fact that the application is completely free of charge and you have an absolute must-have DSiWare title that should end up providing many hours of fun for you and your friends.
I'm gonna wait until later to play this, since the new Team Fortress 2 update was also released today, and if I play that as much as possible before the Americans all wake up, there's more chance of me getting a good game without waiting for servers to free spaces. Anyways, really looking forward to giving this (and 3-2-1 Rattle Battle) a go!
@Turbo Genesis: It's because this is something everybody with a DSi has because it's free, plus the creativity makes it perfect for sharing. It's not necessarily due to software quality. Though this a worth a 9, I wouldn't go as far to say a 10.
Hello from France !I've designed a PDF help-card with all shortcuts (even undocumented ones) for FlipNote Studio. It's here (English PDF at the bottom of the column): -astuces-pour-flipnote-studio-dsi
No matter how many DSi games I spend points on, this one is my all-time favorite, despite the fact that it's free! I love it so much. It's a really powerful animation tool if you know how to use it. It's something that you can actually get better at as you practice. I also love how you can publish them through your DSi and view others' as well. It's an amazing app!
HA! A rating I finally agree with!!!!!!!! Well, I was thinking it to be a 10, but going by how the reviewers rate on here(no offense) I was actually expecting it to say 2/10, but it's a good rating. I like Flipnote studio, I like making my cartoons and showing them! I made one of the girl from the ring coming out of the DSi Screen. XD
